Winter Illumination, Gundam SEED at the Gundam Factory

Visiting the Gundam Factory Yokohama for its final winter season in December 2023 was nothing short of epic.

This iconic moment in mecha and pop culture history felt even more monumental as the Gundam—still the largest and most awe-inspiring robotic sculpture on the planet—was bathed in a stunning new winter illumination spectacle. As part of the GFY Winter Illumination 2023 feat. Mobile Suit Gundam Mercury Witch event, visitors were treated to a stunning light show that brought the massive robot to life in a dazzling array of colors and effects.

Timed performances, occurring at 3:20–3:45pm, 5:20–5:45pm, and 7:20–7:45pm each day, featured an atmospheric blend of cutting-edge light projections and music, with Yoasobi’s hauntingly beautiful song "Blessing" setting the tone. Even more magical were the brief special illuminations at 6-6:05pm and 7-7:05pm, which added an extra layer of enchantment to Yokohama's grand winter lighting display.

Those who attended, particularly during the special winter season, witnessed the Gundam at its peak, bathed in lights and set against the backdrop of a vibrant cityscape—a fitting tribute to the enduring legacy of Mobile Suit Gundam. This was the perfect way to cap off a chapter in Yokohama's iconic history. Visitors were encouraged to come before the final curtain falls and the Gundam's remarkable presence took its final bow on March 2024.
